FUNDAMENTALS OF ICU NURSING COURSE

This is a two day course aimed at nurses new to Intensive Care. It is designed to provide an introduction to a broad range of core ICU subjects. Teaching is provided as a mixture of lectures, clinical skill stations and hands-on simulation sessions. The course is taught by senior nurses and doctors from within Wellington ICU.
COURSE CONTENT
  • Acid-base balance & arterial blood gas analysis
  • Mechanical ventilation - principles & practice
  • Haemodynamic assessment
  • Care of the head-injured patient
  • Care of the long-term patient
  • Shock - definition, recognition & management
  • Introduction to paediatrics in ICU
  • Ethics - the withholding & withdrawing of treatment in ICU
Day One includes a rotation through four skill stations including:
  • Airway management
  • Tracheostomy cares
  • Arterial blood gas analysis
  • ECG rhythm recognition

Day Two includes simulation training with the assistance of the National Patient Simulation Centre. Clinical scenarios are simulated in the Intensive Care Unit using monitored mannequins. This is a valuable education tool allowing nurses to learn in real time, improve team work, clinical skills, communication & feedback.
