INTENSIVE CARE REGISTRARS
Registrars working in our Intensive Care Unit consist of doctors undergoing specialist training in Intensive Care and those rotating through from other specialities such as Anaesthesia or Emergency Medicine, for whom exposure to Intensive Care is an essential part of their specialist training.
Formal teaching is offered at different levels and is available to all Registrars and Medical Students within our unit. Details are found below.
TEACHING
- ORIENTATION: All registrars beginning work in our unit for the first time will undergo a mandatory two-and-a-half day orientation programme over the first 3 days of the run. All sessions are led by the ICU Specialists and cover topics such as administration, the use of the ICU database, equipment and transport, ventilation, communication & handover, research & clinical trials, and cardiac surgery. A mandatory orientation to the Flight Retrieval Service also occurs during this time at the Life Flight Base at Wellington Airport including safety training and introduction to the aviation medical environment.
- GENERAL TEACHING: This is a weekly hour-long session taught by the ICU Specialists on Intensive Care topics. It is aimed at both ICU & non-ICU registrar trainees. Currently this occurs every Thursday between 11am & 12pm in the ICU Seminar Room.
- FCICM PART II TEACHING: This is aimed at more senior ICU trainees preparing to sit the Fellowship of Intensive Care Medicine Part II exam. Teaching consists of viva practice and 'hot cases' which aim to reflect the actual exam conditions as closely as possible. These are taken by the ICU Specialists & Senior Registrars who have recently passed the exam. College regulations now mandate that a certain number of 'hot cases' have to be performed & passed before any candidate is eligible to sit the Part II exam. These usually occur on a Wednesday afternoon but the frequency is increased closer to the exam date. Those not yet eligible to sit the exam are encouraged to observe.
- WARD ROUND TEACHING: This occurs during morning ward rounds as part of our role as a teaching hospital. This is informal and dependent upon the clinical cases present in the unit.
- JOURNAL CLUB: Current and previous notable papers from the Intensive Care literature are presented weekly every Friday at 1pm by Registrars.
- MORTALITY & MORBIDITY MEETING: These are reviewed weekly with the ICU Specialists every Friday after Journal Club. Attendance is optional and is open to all Registrars.
