The Intensive Care Literature is wide & varied and can be found in both specialist and non-specialist journals.
Some of these are listed below.

THE NEW ENGLAND JOURNAL OF MEDICINE

This high impact factor journal publishes important papers for both a general and specialist Critical Care readership.

JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION

Along with the NEJM, JAMA also maintains a collection of articles related to Critical Care.

CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE

The official publication for the international Society of Critical Care Medicine containing multidisciplinary papers relating to critical illness.

INTENSIVE CARE MEDICINE

The official journal of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine publishes papers on adult & paediatric critical care.

CRITICAL CARE & RESUSCITATION

The journal of the College of Intensive Care Medicine contains papers written by Australasian Intensivists & trainees including examiners for the FCICM exam.

ANAESTHESIA AND INTENSIVE CARE

Published by the Australian Society of Anaesthetists, this journal contains articles relating to Australasian Intensive Care practice.

CRITICAL CARE

This international online-only journal contains a large number of papers available for no charge.

TEXTBOOKS

There are a multitude of Intensive Care textbooks available ranging from large reference texts to smaller summaries intended as exam notes. Some of those recommended by both the College of Intensive Care Medicine & previous (successful) exam candidates are found below.

Oh's Intensive Care Medicine

This is considered the essential text for those sitting the FCICM Part II as many contributors are previous or current examiners. As such it has an Australasian/UK approach to managing Intensive Care patients that is not found in many of the more US-centric texts. It is sufficiently large in scope to provide an overview of important areas and makes it relevant to both trainees & non-trainees in Intensive Care Medicine.

Examination Intensive Care Medicine

This essential text is focused on helping trainees through the process of the ICU Fellowship examinations. It contains specific information on the process of the exam itself and how to approach and plan for the clinical components including vivas and clinical cases. Other chapters cover the ICU literature, data interpretation & PICU for adult Intensivists. It has recently expanded to cover various examinations outside of Australasia including various European Intensive Care qualifications and now includes an interactive DVD with additional exam resources.

Clinical Examination

This book, beloved of medical students the world over, is just as essential for exam candidates for the ICU Fellowship. It provides a structured approach to examining every physical system and includes a large number of clinical photographs, illustrations & summary tables. The accompanying DVD includes ECGs and an imaging library.

Anaesthesia and Intensive Care A-Z

This British reference book covers all aspects of Anaesthesia & Intensive Care Medicine and is succinct and clear written. Entries are arranged alphabetically and provide brief factual summaries of a wide variety of topics suitable for structuring written short answer questions or planning an approach to viva topics.

Data Interpretation In Critical Care Medicine

This Australian book provides many examples of the large amount of data that Intensive Care patients may generate and presents it in a question/answer format. The text covers many topic from respiratory mechanics to biochemistry to microbiology. It is a very useful guide to preparing for the data interpretation questions that are now present in both the written and viva components of the Intensive Care Fellowship exam.

Critical Care Secrets

This American text presents an overview of a large variety of Critical Care topics presented in a question/answer format suitable for viva examination. It is evidence-based & referenced throughout. Summary tables & 'Key Points' help to provide very brief overviews of complex topics making this a useful companion to larger reference books.

Clinical Intensive Care and Acute Medicine

Written by Australian Intensivist Ken Hillman, this a good introduction to areas common to all critically ill patients including fluid therapy, shock and infection. It is grounded in pathophysiological principles and takes a problem-oriented approach to solving common critical care scenarios.

Others

A variety of larger expensive hardcover reference texts are available, mostly written by and for US Intensivists. Some of these include Irwin & Rippe's Intensive Care Medicine, the Textbook of Critical Care, Civetta, Taylor & Kirby's Critical Care, and Current Diagnosis & Treatment in Critical Care.

THE INTENSIVE CARE NETWORK
This online resource is aimed at Australasian Intensive Care trainees and is available for free (registration required). It includes CICM Fellowship exam advice, podcasts, a discussion forum, and has a wide range of educational resources available for download.

CRIT-IQ
This Australian website contains an ever expanding library of clinical scenarios & data interpretation questions with answers that are aimed at the Australasian Intensive Care trainee. It also includes vodcasts & journal club reviews and has recently launched an iPhone app. Access is via a membership fee. Wellington ICU has a generic trainee login - please ask one of the Specialists for details.

LIFE IN THE FAST LANE
This website contains a number of resources & links related to Emergency Medicine & Critical Care. The Clinical Cases section provides a useful Question/Answer approach to scenarios common to both specialties. Access is free & without registration.

CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE TUTORIALS
This North American website provides a basic introduction to some of the scenarios encountered in ICU. It is aimed at junior medical staff new to the specialty and explains difficult concepts in a simplistic way. Free to access.

CRITICAL CARE REVIEWS
A vast collection of free, full access, peer reviewed critical care articles including 'Paper of the Day', Cochrane Reviews, Guidelines and the 'Top 100 Contemporary Critical Care Studies'.

LEARN ICU.ORG
This website is also provided by the Society of Critical Care Medicine. It contains a number of 'Knowledge Areas' that provide a variety of resources including journal articles, guidelines and presentations on different ICU topics. Some content is free, other requires membership of the SCCM.

ICCMU
The New South Wales Government Intensive Care Co-Ordination & Monitoring Unit is a web collaborative of ICUs that includes links to on-line evidence based practice guidelines. This is a useful repository of up-to-date expert opinion.

EQUIPMENT EXPLAINED
This website is the sole work of Dr.Pras Tilakaratna, a UK anaesthetist. He manages to explain complex physical principles in a simple, diagrammatic format. All content is free to access.

iCRITICAL CARE PODCASTS
These podcasts produced by the Society of Critical Care Medicine and are free to download. They feature mostly North American specialists talking about discrete topics & are regularly updated. They cover a broad scope & the entire archive (back to 2005) is maintained online through iTunes.
